Tool and mould making
We offer you tool systems and application consulting for the machining of complex 2.5 and 3D geometries, for the classic machining of hardened mould steels in the diameter range of 3 - 12 mm. Our special passion, however, are our micro tools. Over 100 different geometries from a diameter of 0.05mm.

HIGH-PERFORMANCE TOOLS FOR MOULD MAKING

Tool and mould making plays a key role in many industrial sectors as an upstream supplier. The companies in this sector manufacture special components and products that require individual adaptation to the end customer's specific processing requirements.

Process reliability, precision and accuracy are essential requirements in mould making. These requirements are particularly important in milling.

In order to meet these requirements, we offer various HSC milling cutters specialized for mould making for HSC machining, for 2.5 and 3D copy machining as well as for hard machining up to 68 HRC.

Our range is supplemented by HPC cutters with unequal pitch, TDC cutters, especially for trochoidal machining and thread cutters, which are particularly suitable for thread production with high-strength steel materials.

And not to forget our range of micro milling cutters with an optional neck especially for large penetration depths - from 0.3 mm diameter.

MICRO TOOLS FOR MOULD MAKING

SPPW microtools are specially designed for applications in micro mold making, prototype construction, mechanical engineering and electrode manufacturing.

Many of the typical materials are successfully machined with our tools: hardened steels, graphite, copper and aluminium.

Through our many years of expertise in the field of micro-machining and our collaboration in various research projects, we have been able to develop unique tools that are distinguished by outstanding performance and precision.

This is how our extremely broad product Multiform-Micro-Tools was created.

  • Micro milling cutters from diameter 0.05mm (50µm)

  • Mould making cutters with corner or full radius from Ø0,2mm

  • Smallest drill from Ø0.1 upwards by 0.01 mm

  • Micro reamers in the diameter range from 0.2 - 2.0 mm

  • Micro threading tools for threads from M0.8

  • Deburring tools from Ø0,2mm or radius R0,1mm

  • Process reliability
  • Contour accuracy
  • Less rework
Material

STEEL, HARDENED

Hardened steels are the most common material in mould and tool making. Due to their high hardness, the moulds and tools produced in this way have an extremely long service life.
Most hardened steels have a hardness of up to 54 HRc. They are mainly used for plastic injection moulds and in mechanical engineering.  Steels with a hardness of up to 62 HRc are mainly used for forming tools and heavy-duty mechanical engineering parts, as well as for injection moulding of fibre plastics.
Steels with hardnesses above 62 HRc are used in the manufacture of tools for cold and hot forming, in toolmaking for spindle bearings, valves or other heavily stressed parts.
In the manufacture of moulds and tool parts from hardened steel, the emphasis in machining is on tool life, high process speed and precision.

-> SPPW mold making cutters are optimized for hard materials. For high-strength steels, they have negative cutting angles and particularly many cutting edges. All cutter surfaces are X.Cut coated. They are supplemented by SPPW micro milling cutters for micro mold making from 0.3 mm diameter.
Material

Aluminium

Aluminium alloys (Mg, Si, Cu, Zn)
are very different in their machinability. For example, Al6061 is difficult to machine while Al7075 (AlZnMgCu1.5) is easy to machine.
Depending on the alloy, microstructural changes may occur during storage which cause changes in strength.

-> SPPW aluminium milling cutters have large grooves for optimum chip removal and between 1 and 3 cutting edges.
The cutter surfaces are often polished and coated (Dia.HC, Alu.Cut, Z.Cut) to prevent weld build-up.
Material

COPPER

is used in tool and mould making for the production of electrodes. The requirements for electrodes
are high in terms of shape accuracy and surface quality.
Very often the diameter-length ratios are extreme.

For the machining of copper, the tools must have a high cutting accuracy with good chip removal at the same time so that no burrs occur.

-> SPPW milling cutters for copper are equipped with sharp cutting edges and coated with Z.Cut or Dia.HC for wear protection. Several types of micro mould cutters with Z.Cut coating are available for milling applications in the smallest range.
Material

Graphit

Graphite is another material used in the manufacture of electrodes. Graphite is used especially for electrodes with an extremely unfavourable length-dimension ratio, as it is significantly stiffer than copper. The different types of graphite are mainly distinguished by their grain size. Graphite is very abrasive, i.e. it wears the milling cutters and drills very strongly. Therefore, tools for graphite must be protected by a diamond layer.

-> SPPW tools for graphite are always diamond coated. They are also available in overlength versions to meet the requirements of extreme use depths. For the diameter range below 2mm, SPPW offers special micro milling cutters with diamond coating for cutting diameters from 0.1mm.
